Chapter Eighteen

I drove out of the Shanahan’s parking lot. At a light, I switched CDs to the Psychedelic Furs, but I barely heard the music as I mulled over my interaction with Donovan Loyola. One thing was certain, he was definitely a suspect on my list. A suspect of what, I wasn’t sure. I didn’t actually have a body, or know whether a murder had taken place. Why was Loyola covering his whereabouts? Was he hiding a gambling problem, or more? He wasn’t doing himself any favors by not letting me verify his alibi. I now had a possible motive for Magill’s death – if he was indeed dead – which I thought was likely the case. If Magill was stealing from people, that might make someone angry enough to kill him. I needed to ask Kelly that. I also needed to ask Cal to further scrutinize McGill’s company to see if he could find anything fishy. I thought of something else: Did Kelly Magill know anything about her ex-husband’s activities? I reached for my phone, then realized I didn’t have her number.

The light changed. I swore as I realized the only way to get in touch with her was to go back to Parker. I changed lanes, a horn honked, and I was soon back on I-25, again headed south. I drove to Kelly’s place, but she wasn’t there. A waste of time and gas. I left a note on the door, asking her to call me, and left.

In all my running around, I hadn’t had time to see what information I could find on the company Mark Owens had mentioned, “A Legion.” I drove back to the condo, parked, and went inside. Willie was at work, and Humphrey was lolling on the couch. He looked up, stretched, and jumped down.

“Hello there,” I said to him. He sauntered over and let me pet him. “Aw, you love me,” I said. He purred, then bolted to a fake mouse and started playing with it. “And now you don’t.” A cat, so fickle.

I hadn’t eaten since early this morning, so I fixed a sandwich and got a glass of water, then went into my office and logged onto the computer. I started searching on “A Legion.” I’d never heard of any companies by that name. I got hits for companies like Legion Capital and Legion Corporation. If Brett Magill was managing those company’s finances, or possibly their employee retirement plans, he could be making quite a bit of money. Had Magill’s tiny financial company that consisted solely of himself managed the finances for these companies? I took a bite of my sandwich and kept searching. Then I sat back, finished my sandwich, and thought through my conversation with Owens. He’d said Magill was frustrated with A Legion, that the company was a pain. What made the company such a pain?

“A Legion,” I said out loud, then repeated it a few times. “Wait a minute.”

I got back on the internet and typed in “Allegiant.
